Half-hearted hatred: German attitudes towards French speakers in the fifteenth century and their political significance

In the fifteenth century German speakers in the south-west of the Holy Roman Empire came into increasing contact with neighbouring French speakers. When it was convenient, these French speakers were described as friends or even brothers; conversely, when tensions arose they were regarded as mortal enemies. This situational, ‘half-hearted hatred’ created a legacy of two powerful narratives – one of brotherliness and one of animosity – which have shaped Franco-German relations in the intervening five centuries, right down to the current Eurozone crisis.

The development of Imaging Mass Spectrometry

A newly developed high speed camera provides the possibility to run various experiments in a completely new way.  One of these experiments is described as Imaging Mass Spectrometry (IMS).  IMS combines the standard chemical analysis technique, mass spectrometry, with the advantages of an optical microscope. As a result, a chemical map/photo of a surface can be obtained.

In my talk I will give you a general and easy-to-understand overview of how this technique works, how it has been developed (parts of it in Jesus College) in the last few years, and the impact it can have on medical science.
